From linear notes:
The world just can't get enough of Paul McCartney, from reading about his new
relationship with Heather Mills to wanting to collect all of his released and
unreleased music.
And what better way to start or add to a collections is the latest 2 CD set
from The good folks at Voxx Records "BELGIUM 1971" features the Complete
recording of Paul McCartney and Wings at the Cine Roma in Antwerp. Belgium on
August 22 1972. The sources for this CD come from a combination of an
excellent quality audience recording never issued on an easily accessible CD
before, and the well known 9 song soundboard tape in much better sound quality
than in previous releases, and speed corrected to boot!
Bonus tracks include:
The high light of the disc is a performance of the Leadbelly standard "Cottonfields"
which was a huge hit for the Beach Boys in Great Britain and Western Europe in
1970. Others high-lights are performances of many songs never issued an Wings
records, "1882", "I would Only Smile", "Best Friend", "Say you Don't Mind",
"Henry's Blues", and a very early version of "My Love" With Paul and Linda
sharing much of the Vocals!
The 1972 tour of Europe received scathing Reviews from critics and fans for
what appeared to be lackluster performances comprised largely of unreleased
tunes. However, The 1972 European tour is the most interesting of all of
Paul's touts, largely because of the set list. Never again would Paul be so
daring as to play such an amount of un-issued tunes for an audience clamoring
for Beatles songs.
Paul had envisioned doing this in the past. The origins of the 1972 tour go as
fat- Back as The Beatles 1969 Get Back Sessions, where Paul unsuccessfully
tried to Convince John, George and the rest of the group to go back on the
road performing New songs. The tour did not happen, but at least he got them
to play the Rooftop concert.
Then The Beatles split up and Paul issued McCartney, Ram and the single
"Another Day". Paul formed the first incantation of Wings consisting of Paul,
his lovely Linda On Keyboards, Denny Laine on Guitar and Denny Seiwell on
drums. Later adding Henry McCullough on guitar, Paul started out by doing an
unannounced tour of British Universities. and then tackled Europe in 1972 of
which this 2 CD set is from.
Troubles with the tour began from day one. The set list changed several times
during the tour; henceforth the value of this collertion, for it came from the
tail end of the tour unlike other packages that contained earlier and
unpolished shows.
Despite ragged performances by Paul at the early stages of the tour; the
performances, set list and Paul's voice improved dramatically as the tour
progressed. Even the well-known Marijuana bust in Sweden did little to
dampen the mood of The band that knew the tour would end in an artistic
triumph. The audiences despite their immense disappointment at hearing no
Beatles songs, loved the fact that they saw a Beatle (really) this was the
only reason why they were in attendance
And now it's your opportunity to judge. Crank up this CD and listen to the
beauty and power of an electrifying Rock and Roll performance. The only thing
missing are toothpicks and who Needs Toothpicks?
