CONCERT REVIEW
DETROIT « AUGUST 7, 2003
Fronting His Eigth All Starr Band, The Cheerful Singer And Drummer Brought New Directions To A Concept That Has Served Him Well Since 1989. But This Set Of All-Starrs Is Markedly Different From Its Predecessors; Though The Members - Paul Carrack (Ace, Squeeze, Mike & Mechanics), Colin Haye (Men At Work), John Waite (The Babys, Bad English), Sheila E. (Prince, Her Own Bad Self). All Possess The Necessary Platinum Pedigrees.
The Show's Luster Rested On Ringo, Who Was His Usual Engaging, Peace Sign Waving Self And Was Clearly Energized By Having Some Fresh Material - Courtesy Of His New "Ringo Rama" Album - To Offer. He Dipped Into That Set For Two Songs, The Upbeat And Sentimental Ode To Early Rock "Memphis In Your Mind" And Never Without You," Starr's Tribute To His Late Beatlemate George Harrison.
Starr Also Surprised The Crowd With The Good-Humored "Don't Pass Me By" From The Beatles Even Playing Piano For The Song's First Verse And Chorus. That Provided A Nice Complement To His Usual Assortment Of Beatles Favorites And Solo Hits Such As "It Don't Come Easy," "Photograph," And "The No No Song”: All Rendered With The Kind Of Warm, Nostalgic Glow That Accompanies The Best Timeless Songs.
As In Tradition, The Evening Wound Up With Starr's Sgt. Pepper's Anthem "With A Little Help From My Friends." And While His Friends Give Him Plenty Of Help In This Season's All-Starr Ensemble, It Is His Star That Shines Brightest At The End Of The Night. - Gary Graff.
I Am Truly Blessed To Be Performing With These Talented Artists. I Give Warm Thanks To All Of You In Supporting The All-Starr Band And Myself These Past Fourteen Years. It's True What They Say; Music Makes The World Go 'Round. Stay Tuned To My Website At www.ringostarr.com. - peace and love, ringo Starr
