27.  NO REPLEY - studio demo, take 1.........................................................................1:45

On June 3rd. 1964 the Beatles went into Studio #2 to rehearse songs with drummer Jimmy Nichols, who was replacing the suddenly-ill Ringo on the tour that was to start the next day. Following the rehearsal. George, Paul and John each recorded a demo of one of their most recent compositions. First taped was George's "You Know What To Do," followed by Paul's "It's For You" and John's "No Reply." With Ringo absent percussion on George's track was provided by John Lennon, who played tambourine. The drumming on John's demo was probably provided by Paul, who also sang backup. Both these recordings were released on the Anthology I CD set.

The stereo "A Hard Day's Night" LP

Unless otherwise noted, the lineup is George Harrison; lead guitar, John Lennon: rhythm guitar, Paul McCartney bass guitar and Ringo Star: drums; and all tracks were produced by George Martin and recorded at Abbey Road Studio #2.

  1. A HARD DAY'S NIGHT - take 9, RS1..........................................................................2:34

The title track for film and LP was recorded in nine takes on April 16th, just day's after Ringo had coined the phrase that so aptly captured the movie's mood (see Disc One. Tracks I l-!9).The four track master of the finished take 9 had the basic rhythm elements on track one; John's first vocal on track two; his second vocal, Paul's background vocal, bongos, drums and acoustic guitar on track three, and George Martin's piano plus the final guitar part on track four. On April 20th, rough mono (see Disc One. Track 28) and stereo remixes were produced for United Artists (producers of the film), then on the 23rd a new mono remix called RM10.was created. A third mono remix was produced on June 9th for use in the film, reportedly with an ending that was extended by means of an edit (though as used in the film, the track fades earlier than the released version -see Track 30).Finally, a second stereo remix (called RSI) stereo remix fades just a bit earlier than the mono version.

  2. I SHOULD HAVE KNOEN BETTER - take 22, RS1.......................................................2:44

John's number was begun on February 25th (George's 21st birth day) .when takes l-3-were recorded unhappy with this arrangement on the next day they taped remake takes 4-22 (see Disc One. Tracks 7-8).with John switching from electric to acoustic guitar. The final version take 22, was an overdub of John's harmonica and second vocal onto take 9. The mono remix was produced on March 3rd, while the stereo remix came on June 22nd. On the stereo version, the harmonic intro part pauses at one point while on the mono version there is no pause.

  3. IF I FELL - take 15 RS1..............................................................................................2:19

John again played acoustic guitar for this lovely ballad for which Paul provided background vocals. It was taped in fifteen takes on February 27th, and was  mixed to mono on March 3rd The stereo remix was produced on June 22nd, On the stereo version, John's vocal is double-tracked for the first few lines, while it's single-tracked in mono. Also, the stereo remix has Paul's voice cracking on "vain" the second time they sing "our love... was in vain," while in mono he sings it just fine.

  4. I'M HAPPY JUST TO DANCE WITH YOU - take 4, RS1................................................1:56

Recorded in just four takes, this number was written by John but sung by George, with John and Paul providing background vocals. Take 4 was an overdub onto take 2, with George's vocal double-tracked. The mono remix was created on March 3rd, while June 22nd saw the production of the stereo remix. There are no audible differences between the two.

  5. AND I LOVE HER - take 21 RS1.................................................................................2:09

The first two takes of Paul's ballad were quite different from the eventual acoustic arrangement and were taped on February 25th (see Disc One, Track 6). Returning to it the next day, they taped remake takes 3-19, with Ringo switching to bongos and claves halfway through the session (see Disc One. Track 9) But they still weren't happy with it, and on February 27th they recorded re-remake takes 20-21, with the second being the keeper. Paul's solo vocal was doubletracked during the chorus; he. John and George all played acoustic guitars (with George providing the solo); George played claves and Ringo played bongos (no drums). An early mono remix RM I was produced on March 3rd. This has the vocal single-tracked and was released on the American Something New LP (see Track 18). RM2 and RS1 were both produced on June 22nd, and both have the vocal double-tracked. For some reason the German Something New LP has an extended version of RS1, with six bars of the ending guitar instead of the usual four (see Track 26).

  6. TELL ME WHY - take 8, RS1......................................................................................2:09

John's number, with the composer singing lead and Paul providing background vocals was taped in eight   takes on February 27th (see Disc One, Track 10). The mono remix (with a single-tracked Lennon vocal) was produced on March 3rd, and the stereo (with John's vocal double-tracked) on June 22nd. Mysteriously, the original film soundtrack utilizes a mono remix (see Track 29) which features a different single-tracked lead vocal than the released mono version.

  7. CAN'T BUY ME LOVE - take 4, RS1...........................................................................2:12

While in Paris for a 19-day stint at the Olympia Theatre the Beatles also went to EMI's Pâté' Marconi Studios on January 29th and recorded their next a-side in just four takes (see Disc One, Tracks2-4).The keeping take 4, was treated to McCartney vocal and Harrison guitar overdubs. The mono remix was prepared on February 26th.and the stereo on June 22nd. The second part of the guitar solo overdub is different on the two remixes.

  8. ANY TIME AT ALL - take 11, RS1...............................................................................2:12

The first seven take of this song of John's were taped at the afternoon session on June 2nd.These featured a basic rhythm track and John's first vocal, but the number still lacked a middle eight Returning to the song during the evening session, they taped take 8-11.the number now having a perfected middle eight They also added piano, guitar and Paul's answering vocal. The first mono remix, RM1 was produced on June 4th, while RM2 (for the UK), RM3(for the US) and RSI were all created on June 22nd.The US mono version has the piano mixed way down during the instrumental break (see Track 19).

  9. I'LL CRY INSTEAD - edit of takes 6 & 8, RS1...............................................................1:46

This number of John's was recorded on June 1st in two parts. Section A and Section B. with John switching from electric to acoustic guitar. Takes I -6 were of Section A, while takes 7-8 were of Section B. On June 4th mono remixes were prepared of the two sections, which were then edited together to produce the mono master. The process was repeated on June 22nd for the stereo version. On American releases, the track was artificially lengthened by repeating the first verse (see Track 20).

10. THINGS WE SAID TODAY - take 3, RS1.....................................................................2:36

Paul's number was recorded on June 2nd in just three takes. The first was a false start the second the keeper, and the third an overdub onto take 2 of Paul's second vocal John's piano and Ringo's tambourine. John also played acoustic guitar and sang background vocal. The mono remix was produced on June 9th, and the stereo (which fades a little earlier) on June 22nd.

11. WHEN I GET HOME - take 11, RS1............................................................................2:17

John sang lead and Paul background on this number of Lennon's recorded in 11 takes on June 2nd. The first mono remix, RMI, was created on June 4th. On June 22nd, RM2 (for the UK), RM3 (for the US) and RS1 were produced. The US version (see Track 21), contains a different line ("I love her more 'til I walk out that door again") and has the guitar mixed down lower.

12. YOU CAN'T DO THAT - take 9. RS1............................................................................2:34

Their next b-side was taped in nine takes on February 25th at the first of the sessions that produced the soundtrack songs (see Disc One. Track 5). John sang lead, Paul and George sang backup, George played his new electric 12-string, Paul played cowbell and Ringo played bongos. The next day they produced mono remixes KM I -4,with RM3 going onto the UK single. The stereo remix was created on March 10th. For reasons unknown, on May 22nd George Martin overdubbed a piano part onto take 9, creating the never-used take 10.

13. I'LL BE BACK - take 16, RS1......................................................................................2:22

This song of John's was taped on June 1st with John, Paul and George all playing acoustic guitars and John providing a double-tracked lead vocal. Takes 1-9 were basic rhythm tracks, while takes 10-16 were overdubs (of the second vocal and more acoustic guitar) onto take 9 (see Disc One, Tracks 20-25)The unused RMI was created on June 10th. On June 22nd they produced RM2 (for the UK), RM3 (for the US) and RSI. The UK stereo mix runs slower than the mono version (RM2). The US mono RM3 (see Track 22) has a longer fade at the end and runs closer to the speed of the UK stereo version.

The mono "Long Tall Sally" EP

14. SLOW DOWN - take 6,RM 1......................................................................................2:54

Recorded on June I, the first three takes of this Lally Williams rocker concen-trated on the rhythm tracks. Takes 4-6 were attempts at overdubbing John's vocal onto take 3.On June 4th a final overdub, of George Martin's piano was added to take 6 and the mono remix was produced. The stereo remix, which has the vocal a bit louder and features an extra "woo!" near the end, was created on June 22nd.

15. I CALL YOUR NAME - edit of RM1 of take 5 and RM2 of take 7, RS1ЕЕ............Е..Е..2:06

John's song (an early attempt at ska), was taped in seven takes on March 1st  Onto take 7 was overdubbed a second Lennon vocal and Ringo's cowbell. The final version edited the take 5 guitar solo into take 7. An early mono remix was produced on March 3rd. This was sent to United Artists, indicating that the song was originally slated for inclusion in the film. The following day, March 4th, a second, unused mono remix was created, as was an unused stereo remix on March 10th. On June 4th they produced RM I of take 5 and RM2 of take 7, editing the two together to from the mono master. On June 22nd this procedure was repeated to produce the stereo version. The two versions each feature a different guitar part in the song's intro. Also, in the mono mix, the coebell comes in right at the beginning, while in stereo it doesn't start until the first vocal line. Although it's not documented in the studio paperwork, the version on the stereo US Beatles Second Album is edited together differently than the UK version (see Track 27),

16.  LONG TALL SALLY - take 1, RM2..............................................................................2:00

Paul screamed his way through this Little Richard classic (by Johnson-Penniman-Blackwell) in just one take with George Martin playing the piano part, A first mono remix (see Track 23) and an unused stereo remix were produced on March 10th, and a second mono remix was prepared on June 4th. The stereo remix was produced on June 22nd. Both mono remixes have the vocal mixed lower than the stereo version, and RM1 has less reverb on Paul's vocal than RM2 does.

17.  MATCHBOX - take 5, RM1.........................................................................................1:55

This Carl Perkins number was taped on June 1st with the composer in the studio observing the proceedings. Five takes were taped and the final version featured a double-tracked Ringo vocal and George Martin on the piano. The mono mix was produced on June 4th, and the stereo on June 22nd the two are significantly different The vocal is double-tracked during the chorus in the stereo version, but not in the mono, and each version features a different guitar solo. Also, different vocals were used later in the song:  in mono Ringo sings "your puppy dog he done run," while in stereo it's "puppy dog run.

The German single in stereo

24.  KOMM, GIB MIR DEINE HAND - edit of takes 5 & 7, RS2..2:22 Recorded in Paris at EMI's Pâté' Marconi Studios. EMI's West German subsidiary, Odeon, had requested that the Fabs record some tracks in German, so while they were in Paris for a stint at the Olympia Theatre, they laid down two numbers to satisfy this request Starting with the basic rhythm tracks of "I Want To Hold Your Hand," take 17, they taped takes 1 -11 of vocal and handclap overdubs. The final version edited together parts of takes 5 and 7. The mono remix was prepared on March 10th, while stereo remixing occured two days later. The stereo version released on the American Something New LP featured someone talking in one channel before the singing began

(see Track 28). This was mixed out of the UK stereo release (on the Rarities LP).

25.  SIE LIEBT DICH - take 14, RS1ЕЕЕЕЕЕЕЕЕЕЕЕЕ..........ЕЕЕ....................2:17

This number was recorded at the same time as Track 24. Because the original session tapes for "She Loves You" had been lost, it was nesessary to tape this version from scratch. Thirteen takes of the rhythm tracks were recorded and take 14 was vocal overdub onto take 13 (see Disc One, Track I). The mono remix was produced on March 10th, and the stereo two days later. There is no significant difference between the two.

30. A HARD DAY'S NIGHT - take 9, mono film mix............................................................2:29

These tracks were taken from the restored version of the film broadcast on American Movie Classics. The first features a different single-tracked vocal than that heard on the mono release (see Track 6). The title song was played at the beginning and end of the film, and the version presented here was edited together from the two. It is a different mono mix than the one that was released (see Track 1).
